A small town in boring old Florida is the setting of our story. A place no one would dare think something extraordinary could happen. But they couldn't be more wrong.
Long ago, around the time of the first World War, a group of explorers searched for a way to defeat the enemy. They searched long and hard, fearing that the war would be long over before they succeeded. During a freak blizzard, they took shelter in a deep cave in the mountain they were searching. Inside, the cave was full of drawings; drawings of people, drawings of animals. There were also footprints. But with every hand print, there were various animal prints on top of it. In the depth of the cave was a large stone. It stood two man-lengths high and glowed with the entire colour spectrum. Out of pure desperation, the leader of the expedition spoke to the stone. "We need a way to win the war." And the stone replied. "The answer is inside of you." The next thing then explorers knew, the drawings had come to life, circling them and swirling around, glowing vibrantly. Seconds later the light dimmed. But the explorers were very different. The leader, a bold courageous man, now stood on four paws, intelligent face and eyes scanning everything. The body of a wolf. His second in command, a quiet, shy guy, clad in soft fur. The body of a hare. The final explorer, a sharp-eyed woman, eyes now intensified to the extreme, coated in feathers. The body of a hawk. Moments later, by will, they were human again. But, of course, they couldn't tell anyone what had happened. They kept it a secret for years. Until they began passing on the trait to their children. The gift could no longer be kept a secret. So the three explorers founded a school K-12 for all children who inherited the ability.
That school stands now, housing students who have inherited the ability from their ancestors. Most students are content to stay at the school, going from human to animal as they pleased. But others long for a taste of the outside world, outside their little town. Oh, did I forget to mention? The "school" is actually a small community, much like an average one you would see around town. Only it is surrounded and covered by steel and barbed wire. No one is to leave. But there are those, young and old alike, who don't agree with the three explorers' plans. Since the three are dead, they are no longer in control, right? The rebels can have their freedom, right? Well, that's for you to decide...
